The Calgary Stampeders are optimistic that Eric Rascoe can become the next Alex Singleton. With the sixth overall pick in the 2026 Canadian Football League Draft, the team selected the pro-ready linebacker, hoping to strengthen a position that has been thin in their defence.
A Promising Prospect
Rascoe, who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 215 pounds, already has professional football experience under his belt. After a standout five-year career with the NCAA's Angelo State Rams, he played last season for the San Antonio Gunslingers of the Indoor Football League, recording 39 tackles, two passes defended, and one sack. This experience sets him apart from typical draft picks, as he has already competed at a professional level.
Comparisons to Alex Singleton
The Stampeders see similarities between Rascoe and Alex Singleton, who became a CFL superstar before moving on to the NFL. Both players have Canadian mothers, making them eligible for the CFL draft as non-imports. Stampeders GM and head coach Dave Dickenson acknowledged this, saying, 'Yeah, we got a fake Canadian. But guess what? Alex was a hell of a player. Former fake Canadian receiver Ben Cahoon, too. And this kid has structure, support, discipline, and motivation. He is a football player. It was a good pick for us.'
Rascoe's Reaction
Rascoe expressed his excitement and gratitude upon being drafted by Calgary. 'Just very, very thankful, man. Very thankful. It was in my head. I kind of felt like it was going to be Calgary, and when I saw my name pop up, I said, OK, I was right. There is confirmation. So definitely just a lot of relief and thankfulness.'
Pro Experience Valued
Rascoe's decision to play in the Indoor Football League after college was strategic. Instead of sitting out the year, he chose to stay active and improve his skills. Dickenson praised this approach: 'He knew he was going to take a year off. So why just sit on the street and wait? He wanted to compete and play and get better. I am telling you, the guy is motivated. He is going to be a great addition to our team. And he is 26 or going to be 26, so it is not like you get a young, inexperienced guy. This guy is a man.'
Versatility on Display
Rascoe considers himself a versatile football player. 'I am a football player. I am somebody who loves the game. I try to be versatile and do a lot of different things. I think if you watch my tape, you will see me doing a lot of different things. And so I just like to call myself a football player.' His performance at the CFL Combine in Edmonton further impressed scouts, as he excelled in drills and interviews.
Looking Ahead
With his pro experience and motivation, Rascoe is expected to compete for a starting role immediately. The Stampeders are confident that he can make an impact similar to Singleton's, providing a boost to their defence. As Dickenson noted, 'We were excited to get him.'
