Leafs players reflect on Berube's firing and future

Those Maple Leafs who played under Craig Berube expressed sadness over his firing but are now focused on the future under new general manager John Chayka. Several players currently with the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League playoffs shared their reflections on the coaching change.

Players react to Berube's departure

Winger Easton Cowan, whose rookie NHL season saw increased responsibility under Berube, acknowledged the tough year but appreciated the coach's guidance. "Obviously we had a tough year," Cowan said. "Craig taught me a lot, how to simplify the game. You have to gain your coach's trust, which I had to do that in London (with the OHL Knights), right back to minor hockey." Cowan emphasized his focus on playing his game in the playoffs and preparing for the summer.

Centre Jacob Quillan noted Berube's fairness in allowing players to work their way up the lineup. "Just being around him, his (NHL) experience, I was thankful of working under him. You look at Easton and he's a pretty good example," Quillan said.

Forward Bo Groulx, who quickly earned Berube's trust after a strong start, described the coach as "old school yet fair." Groulx stated, "Chief was great to me in a short period, did nothing but put me in good situations. An old school coach, yet fair, he embraces the new mentality. His system was very easy to follow. I owe him a lot for that, he made my time with the Leafs very enjoyable." Groulx also expressed excitement about Chayka's analytics background and its potential benefits.

Mermis reflects on history with both Berube and Chayka

Defenceman Dakota Mermis, who played under Berube this season and last, and also under Chayka in Arizona, offered a veteran perspective. "As an older guy, I've been through this before," Mermis said. "When something's gone wrong it's never solely on a coach, a manager or any one player. But certainly the results weren't what we wanted." Mermis praised Berube's directness and clear expectations. "Craig was a hard coach, a direct coach, the expectation was very clear. As a depth guy myself, we had a very clear understanding of what's expected right down the entire staff. I didn't feel I was in the dark in any situation. He'll pick up somewhere else."

Mermis encouraged teammates to focus on their performance rather than worrying about management decisions. "If what you do is right and your process is right, the rest of it is out of your hands and it plays out. Whether you're on an expiring contract or you have more term, just focus on what's going on here (playoffs)." He acknowledged not having spoken to Chayka since his hiring but hopes their past familiarity will help his standing.

Marlies coach John Gruden indicated it was too early to comment on potential interviews for a restocked coaching staff. The team's statement noted that Leafs assistants will be selected by the new head coach.
