Calgary Dinos End 25-Year Championship Drought with Gritty Victory Over UBC

The University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team has reclaimed the Canada West championship title for the first time since 2001, marking a historic moment for the program. In a hard-fought battle against the host UBC Thunderbirds at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver, the Dinos emerged victorious with a 63-57 win on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

Defensive Mastery Secures Ninth Program Title

This victory brings the prestigious Valerie Gersberger Trophy back to Calgary for the ninth time in the Dinos' history. The championship game showcased a tale of two halves, with UBC holding a narrow 30-28 lead at halftime after a low-scoring opening period that featured more combined free throws than field goals.

The momentum shifted decisively in the second half as Calgary's defense took control. "This is an incredibly special group," said first-year head coach Sarah Besselink, reflecting on the team's journey. "We've just been stacking wins since then, relying on our defense and our pressure. The whole team is just buying in." Coach Besselink pointed to a pivotal late-January turnaround against provincial rivals Saskatchewan and Alberta as the catalyst for their championship run.

Key Performances Lead to Championship Glory

Game MVP Pollyanna Storie led the offensive charge for Calgary with 16 points, while Kourtney Oss contributed 13 points on efficient 4-7 shooting and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. The Dinos' defensive intensity was personified by Canada West Defensive Player of the Year Amelie Collin, who added four steals to her career total along with four points, four assists, three rebounds, and a block.

Other notable contributions came from Christine Geraldo and Milica Gajic, each adding nine points. Geraldo's performance included a career-high seven rebounds and a crucial block on the game's final shot. Forward Emma Yarwood made her presence felt in the post with six points and seven rebounds.

Fourth Quarter Surge Seals the Victory

The game remained tightly contested until the final quarter. After UBC's Toneguzzi gave the Thunderbirds a brief 44-42 lead early in the fourth, Gajic responded with a basket that ignited an 11-2 run for Calgary. This surge gave the Dinos a 53-46 advantage with just over four minutes remaining, a lead they would not relinquish.

Calgary's composure at the free-throw line proved decisive in the closing minutes, as they converted 9 of 12 attempts from the charity stripe to secure the championship. For UBC, Olivia Weekes led all scorers with 19 points, adding seven rebounds and two blocks in a valiant effort.

The Dinos' championship victory represents not just the culmination of a season's work, but the realization of a quarter-century dream for the program. Their defensive identity and team-first mentality have now been immortalized in Canada West basketball history.
