Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has delivered a significant vote of confidence in young forward Jacob Quillan, stating the prospect is nearing a permanent spot on the NHL roster. The assessment came on Tuesday after Quillan was recalled from the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies.
Coach's Confidence and Immediate Opportunity
Berube made his comments following the morning skate ahead of the Leafs' home game against the New Jersey Devils at Scotiabank Arena. He emphasized Quillan's readiness to contribute immediately, citing the player's notable attributes. "I think he’s getting close to being an NHL player, and a full-time one, with his ability," Berube stated. "I love Quillan’s energy and his speed. He’s a young kid, but he could come in and provide what we need tonight and going forward. It’s a good opportunity for him."
The recall comes as the team manages the status of captain Auston Matthews, who is considered a game-time decision due to a lower-body injury sustained on Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings. During the morning skate, Quillan was positioned between wingers Steven Lorentz and Calle Jarnkrok in line rushes.
Quillan's Steady Development Path
The 23-year-old center from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, has shown consistent progress since signing with the Maple Leafs organization in April 2024 after a three-year collegiate career at Quinnipiac University. His development with the Marlies has been particularly impressive this season. He currently leads the AHL affiliate in scoring with 23 points, comprising five goals and 18 assists, across 26 games.
This production builds on a solid rookie AHL campaign last year, where he recorded 37 points (18 goals, 19 assists) in 67 games. Quillan's continued ascent is a positive sign for a Leafs prospect pool that is not overflowing with elite-level talent. He is set to become a restricted free agent in the summer of 2025.
Seizing the Moment in the Big League
Quillan received the promotion call from Leafs assistant general manager Ryan Hardy on Monday, just before the Marlies were set to depart for a road game in Cleveland. The young forward has appeared in three NHL games to date, including two earlier this season, and is still seeking his first point at hockey's highest level.
Speaking about his latest opportunity, Quillan expressed a sense of growing comfort. "I’ve gotten reps and I’m a little more comfortable with the system and the guys," he said. "I’m looking to play my game and hopefully create something. I want to play well (with the Marlies), build some confidence and bring it up here and show what I can do."
If Berube's evaluation proves accurate and Quillan can translate his AHL success to the NHL stage, the Maple Leafs will have added a valuable, homegrown piece to their lineup at a critical time, bolstering their center depth for the present and future.
