Cochrane Skier Kiara Alexander Balances Olympic Dreams with Fashion Ambitions

Cochrane alpine skier Kiara 'Kiki' Alexander is poised to make her Olympic debut this week, representing Canada in the women's slalom event at the Winter Games. The 24-year-old athlete has secured a spot on Canada's World Cup alpine team for the current season, marking a significant milestone in her skiing career.

Dual Passions: From Slopes to Fashion Runways

Beyond her athletic pursuits, Alexander is cultivating a parallel career as a fashion designer. Her athletic apparel brand, 'Koko by Kiki,' represents her commitment to connecting her two worlds. "I'm pretty lucky to be able to experience that," Alexander remarked about balancing her sporting and creative endeavors.

The young skier has already begun studying women's styling and social media branding through an online course with the Milan Fashion Institute. She expressed particular excitement about potentially visiting Milan after the Olympics, noting the city's status as both a global fashion capital and a host location for the 2026 Winter Games.

Overcoming Adversity on the Road to the Olympics

Alexander's journey to the Olympic stage has been anything but smooth. In December 2022, she suffered a devastating knee injury during giant slalom training in Italy. The accident resulted in:

  • A torn ACL and lateral meniscus
  • A fractured femoral condyle at the bottom of her femur
  • Multiple surgical procedures, including a second operation in June 2023 to address scar tissue

After nearly two years away from competition, Alexander returned to skiing in December 2023 and made her competitive comeback in November 2024. "The road has definitely come with a bunch of challenges—that's for sure," she acknowledged.

Mental Resilience and Personal Growth

Despite the physical hurdles, Alexander found unexpected value in her recovery process. "I actually found my rehab part of my injury quite fun and exciting, in a way, because I was learning so much about myself as an athlete," she revealed.

The mental aspect of returning to competition has presented its own challenges. "When I actually got back into racing, then that's where I faced almost my bigger challenges of relearning how to race after two seasons out of the start gate," Alexander explained. "That was definitely the hardest part for me mentally, and I'm still trying to figure it out."

Olympic Preparation and Future Aspirations

Alexander is scheduled to compete in the final alpine skiing event of the Olympics, with her slalom runs taking place on Wednesday. As she prepares for this career-defining moment, she continues to nurture her fashion ambitions alongside her athletic goals.

The Cochrane High School graduate represents a new generation of athletes who successfully pursue multiple passions, demonstrating that dedication to sport doesn't require sacrificing other creative interests. Her story highlights the growing trend of athletes developing brands and businesses that complement their sporting careers.

As Alexander takes to the Olympic slopes, she carries with her not just the hopes of Canadian skiing fans, but also the aspirations of a designer looking to make her mark in the fashion world. Her ability to "connect both worlds" serves as inspiration for young athletes everywhere who seek to define success on their own terms.
