Easton Cowan Embraces AHL Playoffs with Toronto Marlies After Leafs' NHL Exit

Easton Cowan, the Toronto Maple Leafs' top rookie forward, has found a new home for the postseason with the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies. After the Leafs failed to qualify for the NHL playoffs, Cowan eagerly accepted an opportunity to extend his season with the farm team, bringing his playoff pedigree to the AHL arena.

Playoff Rhythm and Immediate Impact

Cowan expressed enthusiasm for this time of year, noting the changing weather and positive atmosphere at the rink. "The weather is changing, the Blue Jays start playing, a lot of good vibes at the rink," he said after a recent Marlies victory. His transition to the AHL has been seamless, with Cowan quickly adapting to the playoff rhythm he knows well from his junior hockey days with the London Knights, where he made consecutive Memorial Cup appearances.

In his debut weekend with the Marlies, Cowan made an immediate impact. He contributed a goal and an assist in a Saturday game against the Laval Rocket, earning first-star honors. On Sunday, he assisted on Dakota Mermis' opening-minute goal and endured physical play, including a hard hit from Luke Tuch. "Two wins, good for me to get some chem going here," Cowan remarked. "It's been a crazy couple of days."

Team Dynamics and Playoff Preparation

The Marlies secured back-to-back wins over the North Division-leading Laval Rocket, but Sunday's result became inconsequential when the Cleveland Monsters clinched third place, forcing Toronto into a best-of-three series against the Rochester Americans starting Wednesday. Cowan is among several Leafs players demoted to the Marlies after the NHL season ended, joining forwards Jacob Quillan, Luke Haymes, Michael Pezzetta, defenceman William Villeneuve, and goalie Artur Akhtymanov.

Marlies coach John Gruden praised Cowan's decision to join the team. "Cowan is a great guy for wanting to come down here and play with us," said Pezzetta, who scored an empty-net goal on Sunday. "He's a top player and guys will take runs at him, especially down here. It's something we'll deal with when we get to the playoffs." Gruden emphasized the value of winning as part of player development, stating, "Winning is developing, too." He plans to work with general managers Ryan Hardy and Mike Dixon to optimize the lineup for playoff success.

Statistical Highlights and Team Morale

Jacob Quillan's two points on Sunday tied him with Logan Shaw for the team season lead at 54 points. Forward Bo Groulx, whose NHL waiver lifeline expired, finished the season with 52 points, trailing Shaw and Alex Nylander (53 points). Captain Logan Shaw achieved a milestone by playing his 72nd game, becoming the first Marlie to complete a full regular season since Connor Brown in 2014-15.

In goal, Artur Akhtyamov made 32 saves on Sunday after Dennis Hildeby's 35 saves the previous day. Gruden has yet to announce a starter for Game 1 against Rochester. The Marlies face a Rochester team that has lost much of its top talent to the Buffalo Sabres for NHL playoff insurance, potentially setting up a North Division showdown with Laval later in the postseason.

Cowan's playoff experience and skill set are expected to be crucial for the Marlies. "Cowan makes plays few others can and has been a winner at the junior level," Gruden noted. "He knows what it takes." As the AHL playoffs begin, Cowan and his teammates are focused on translating their regular-season momentum into a deep postseason run, with Cowan's energy and winning mentality leading the charge.
