Flames Players Enjoy Lighthearted Moment After Defeating Panthers
Calgary Flames forward Blake Coleman couldn't help but laugh when asked about the team's unusual pre-game warmup routine that was captured on camera before their 4-1 victory over the Florida Panthers on Friday night at Scotiabank Saddledome.
A Knightly Ceremony or Just Pure Fun?
Cameras caught Coleman participating in what appeared to be a mock knighting ceremony with teammates Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee during warmups. When questioned about the peculiar display, Coleman responded with humor and a pop culture reference that perfectly captured the moment's spirit.
"We're just dumb, we've got a few things going on," Coleman said with a chuckle. "They kind of remind me of Harry and Lloyd (from Dumb and Dumber) and I just wanted to be a part of it."
The veteran forward emphasized that there was no deep significance to the warmup antics, describing it simply as "a bit of fun" that shouldn't be overanalyzed.
Longstanding Tradition of Goofy Warmups
According to Morgan Frost, the playful warmup routines date back to his time playing with Farabee for the Philadelphia Flyers. The pair have developed a tradition of improvising silly warmup moves that happened to be caught on camera during Friday's game.
"Our whole time playing together, we kind of just make stuff up on the go," Frost explained. "I don't really remember how it started, but Colesy got in there. Did you see the whole clip of it? There's some weird stuff in there."
Frost added that Coleman, as a respected veteran player, has joined in on their fun, creating a lighthearted atmosphere that extends beyond just the three players involved.
Positive Team Vibes Despite Roster Changes
The playful warmup routine comes at a time when the Flames could have been experiencing a difficult stretch following the trade deadline departures of key players Nazem Kadri and MacKenzie Weegar. Instead, the team has maintained a surprisingly positive atmosphere and competitive performance.
Since the trade deadline, the Flames have posted a respectable 4-4 record in eight games, exceeding expectations for a team that many thought might struggle down the stretch. The victory over the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers only added to the positive momentum.
Coleman revealed that the fun extends beyond just his trio, noting that teammate Ryan Lomberg sometimes joins in with what he described as "together roars." The veteran forward emphasized that he lets the younger players take the lead in these lighthearted moments.
Winning Makes Everything More Fun
The Flames' ability to combine on-ice success with off-ice camaraderie has created an environment where players feel comfortable expressing themselves and having fun. As Coleman noted, when you're beating elite teams like the Panthers, who could possibly fault players for enjoying themselves during warmups?
This combination of competitive spirit and locker room chemistry suggests that the Flames are building something special, even as they navigate the challenges of a transitional season. The goofy warmup routine captured on Friday night serves as just one example of how this team is finding ways to stay loose and connected while still getting results on the ice.
