Rhode Island Hockey Star Scores Overtime Winner After Family Tragedy
In a poignant and emotional moment on the ice, Colin Dorgan, a high school hockey star from Rhode Island, scored a game-winning goal in overtime to lead his team to the state championship final. This triumph comes just weeks after a devastating family tragedy unfolded during one of his games, where his transgender father, Robert Dorgan, also known as Roberta Esposito, went on a shooting spree, killing three family members.
A Heartbreaking Backstory
The incident occurred on February 16 at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Robert Dorgan opened fire, resulting in the deaths of Aidan Dorgan, 23, Rhonda Dorgan, 52, and Gerald Dorgan, who later succumbed to injuries. Colin was on the ice at the time, witnessing the horrific events helplessly. His grandmother Linda and a family friend, Thomas Geruso, were also critically injured. In response, the Rhode Island Interscholastic League suspended play temporarily.
The Game-Winning Moment
On Wednesday, Colin Dorgan of the Blackstone Valley Schools Co-op team broke away during overtime in the Division 2 semifinal. He skillfully slid the puck through the Portsmouth goalie's five-hole, securing a victory that sparked a raucous celebration among teammates and coaches. The goal sent his team to the championship game scheduled for March 18 in Providence.
Colin described the moment as surreal, telling WPRI, "It was the greatest moment of my life. My good buddy fed me the puck and I could hear the crowd ... it was a surreal moment." He paid tribute to his lost family members by wearing their initials on his jersey, emphasizing the team's unity during this difficult time.
Emotional Reactions and Support
Blackstone Valley head coach Chris Librizzi was deeply moved by the event, stating, "I literally cried like a baby, the floodgates opened. When I saw him open, I knew he was golden." The community has rallied around Colin, with social media posts highlighting the incredible resilience shown in the face of such personal loss.
This story underscores the power of sports to provide solace and hope amid tragedy, as Colin and his team continue to navigate their grief while pursuing athletic success.
