Oilers' Ike Howard Overcomes NHL Jitters After AHL Stint

Oilers Rookie Ike Howard Finds His NHL Footing After AHL Journey

When Ike Howard was acquired by the Edmonton Oilers from the Tampa Bay Lightning in July, the 2025 Hobey Baker Award recipient probably anticipated a smoother entry into the National Hockey League. Instead, his inaugural professional campaign has seen him log more appearances in the American Hockey League than the NHL, a path he likely didn't foresee.

From Farm Team to Second-Line Duty

Howard's recall from the Bakersfield Condors on Sunday, following Max Jones's leg injury against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, marked another twist in his rookie year. After initially serving in a fourth-line capacity with the Oilers, he was elevated to left wing on the second line, skating alongside Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jack Roslovic in Monday's matchup against the Colorado Avalanche.

The 22-year-old forward has accumulated five points across 28 NHL games over two separate stints this season. In contrast, he has tallied 22 goals and 47 points in 45 games with Bakersfield during this abbreviated campaign. Howard began the year in Edmonton, appearing in 17 contests before being reassigned to the AHL in mid-November upon Zach Hyman's return from wrist surgery rehabilitation. He returned on January 2 for another 11 games before spending the subsequent two and a half months back in the minors.

Embracing the Process and Special Teams Work

"Knowing all the guys in the room makes it pretty easy to come back. Anytime you get a chance to be back, I'm just excited to play," Howard remarked. In Bakersfield, he focused on refining his defensive game and puck pursuit, elements he can control consistently. "I was working on keeping it simple there, staying on pucks, hounding pucks, in the D zone always having your stick in the right spots," he explained.

Howard also embraced penalty-killing duties, drawing inspiration from NHL first-year winger Matt Savoie's AHL performance last season. "I was killing some penalties last week, getting into that rhythm. I enjoy it. I did it at Michigan State," he noted. His ice time significantly increased in the AHL, averaging around double the 10:19 minutes per night he saw with the Oilers, allowing for more puck touches and game rhythm.

Coach's Perspective and Team Impact

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch praised Howard's adaptability and work ethic. "He's been in Edmonton and in Bakersfield he's done what's been asked of him," Knoblauch stated, highlighting improvements in defensive responsibility alongside offensive contributions. "When you add a guy from the farm team, there's a boost of energy. He'll give us some speed and he'll be playing with some offensive guys," he added, underscoring Howard's potential to energize the lineup.

Injury Update: Jason Dickinson's Status

In related team news, third-line center Jason Dickinson is sidelined for the final two regular-season games after sustaining a leg injury from a shot against the San Jose Sharks last week. Reports indicate he has been in a walking boot, with no official medical diagnosis yet—possibilities include a severe bone bruise or fracture. His availability for Game 1 of the playoffs is uncertain, estimated at no better than 50-50.

Dickinson's absence is a significant blow, as he serves as a shutdown center and penalty-kill asset. However, Knoblauch expressed confidence in farm call-up Josh Samanski, who has dressed for 22 games. "If we're missing Dickinson, Samanski is the guy who would take over the defensive role. It's a good comparison. They play a similar style. They're both big and cover a lot of area. One has been in the NHL numerous years and the other is just coming in," the coach noted, indicating Samanski could step into Dickinson's role if needed.

Howard's journey from AHL standout to NHL contributor exemplifies the resilience required in professional hockey, as he shakes off early nerves to make an impact in Edmonton's lineup.
