A somber atmosphere descended upon Place Bell in Laval on Saturday afternoon as an American Hockey League game was halted due to a fatal medical emergency involving a spectator.
Game Halted for Medical Emergency
The match between the Laval Rocket and the visiting Manitoba Moose was stopped with one minute and 12 seconds remaining in the third period. The Rocket was trailing 3-0 when the incident occurred in the stands, prompting immediate action from emergency responders.
Videos from the arena showed medical personnel performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on an individual in the seating area. The sports network RDS confirmed on Sunday that a person had died at the game.
Rocket Mourns a Loyal Fan
The Laval Rocket organization later identified the deceased in a social media statement. Michel Pelletier, a seven-season member of the team's fan community, passed away during the game. The team expressed its profound sadness and offered sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
The statement highlighted Pelletier's unwavering support, saying, "He has always been there to encourage us and the Rocket family is wholeheartedly with his family."
Family Responds with Gratitude
Family members shared their grief and appreciation online. Sophie Pelletier, identifying as his daughter, posted on the Rocket's Facebook page that her father died peacefully at the game, "where he liked to be." She described him as a devoted fan of the club.
The victim's brother also posted a message, thanking the Rocket organization for its class and for bringing his brother joy over the seasons. He extended gratitude to all medical responders who attempted to save his life.
Attendees noted the empathetic decision to stop the game. Fan Marie-Hélène Séguin posted praise for the organization's swift action. Another fan noted that rookie goaltender Jacob Fowler, playing his first game for the Rocket after a reassignment from the Montreal Canadiens, was among those who alerted officials to the situation in the stands.
