The Toronto Marlies are Calder Cup champions for the second time in franchise history, and first since 2018, after defeating the Chicago Wolves 4-3 in Game 5 of the best-of-seven final on Friday night. An emotional and loud crowd of 8,682 at the Coca-Cola Coliseum witnessed the victory.
Cowan and Akhtyamov Lead the Way
Two players who hope to one day contribute to Maple Leafs playoff success were instrumental in the Marlies' triumph. Forward Easton Cowan and goaltender Artur Akhtyamov delivered standout performances. Akhtyamov was excellent in his 20th consecutive start, providing the backbone for the series win.
Cowan, who turned 21 last month, has now won four hockey championships. In addition to the Calder Cup, he previously captured two Ontario Hockey League titles with the London Knights and a Memorial Cup last year. Cowan recorded three assists in Game 5 and finished the playoffs with 18 points in 22 games following his rookie season with the Leafs. His spot on the Toronto roster next season appears secure.
Comeback Victory
The Marlies fell behind 2-0 in the first period but responded with four unanswered goals. Fourth-liner Landon Sim deflected a Matt Benning point shot late in the first period to cut the deficit. In the second period, goals by Bo Groulx, Jacob Quillan, and Vinni Lettieri gave the Marlies a 4-2 lead. Chicago’s Felix Unger Sorum scored his second of the game on a power play with six seconds left in the period, but the Marlies held on.
After Groulx’s goal, chants of “We want the Cup!” echoed through the arena. The Marlies delivered, securing the championship with a blend of veterans and youngsters, timely scoring, depth, and character under coach John Gruden.
Prospect Ben Danford Impresses
Leafs general manager John Chayka praised prospect Ben Danford, a right-handed defenseman acquired in a trade. Danford, 20, played 16 playoff games with the Marlies after joining from Brantford of the OHL. Chayka noted Danford’s understanding of his role and commitment to development, projecting him as an impact NHL player in the future.
Akhtyamov, along with Quillan and Groulx, will compete for Leafs jobs in training camp. Cowan is expected to secure a full-time role next season.
