Edmonton Oilers Reassign Forward Matt Savoie to AHL's Bakersfield Condors

The Edmonton Oilers have made a significant roster move, sending rookie forward Matt Savoie down to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. This decision, announced on Tuesday, provides the young player with an opportunity for further development and a fresh start.

A Strategic Move for Player Development

Matt Savoie has been a consistent presence in the Oilers lineup this season, appearing in all 58 games and contributing nine goals and nine assists. Despite this regular playing time, the organization believes a stint in the AHL will benefit his long-term growth. "He's probably excited to have a little bit of a reset here and just have another opportunity to go get back after it," said a team representative. "And I'm excited that we can just be a part of what's next for him."

The reassignment could serve multiple purposes for the Oilers organization:

  • Salary Cap Management: The move allows for necessary financial maneuvering within the NHL's salary cap structure.
  • Development Opportunity: Savoie gains valuable ice time and experience in a competitive environment.
  • CBA Compliance: The transaction ensures Savoie plays at least one game with the Condors as required by the collective bargaining agreement.

Savoie's Journey and Performance

This marks Savoie's return to Bakersfield, where he previously excelled during the 2024-2025 season. In 64 games with the Condors, he recorded an impressive 54 points (19 goals, 35 assists) after being acquired from the Buffalo Sabres in a July 2024 trade that sent Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio to Buffalo.

During his NHL stint this season, Savoie developed into a valuable penalty-killing asset for the Oilers. He accumulated nearly 90 minutes of shorthanded ice time, ranking behind only defensemen Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm in this specialized role. This defensive contribution highlights the multifaceted skills he honed during his previous AHL development.

Coaching Perspective and Player Comparisons

Bakersfield Condors head coach Colin Chaulk provided insight into Savoie's development trajectory, drawing comparisons to other successful Oilers prospects. "I would say a good comparison is Dylan Holloway," Chaulk noted. "Matt's competitiveness was excellent. His production wasn't at the start of the year in the American League, but in the second half of the season he kept his competitiveness and started producing more and finishing more."

Chaulk emphasized that NHL development typically requires patience, citing examples of players who needed multiple seasons to establish themselves as regular contributors. "When you think about Dylan Holloway, who is a pretty good player in the NHL right now, it took him three seasons to develop as a regular. And the same with Philip Broberg. And the same with Ryan McLeod—it didn't take him just one season in the American League."

Broader Team Context

Savoie's occasional scoring challenges this season reflect broader issues within the Oilers' bottom six forward group, where secondary scoring opportunities have been limited. If point production alone determined roster decisions, several other Oilers players could have faced similar reassignments.

Coach Chaulk acknowledged the difficulty of scoring in professional hockey, particularly for young players adjusting to the NHL pace. "Even now in the American League, for the last bit of the season there's no space and it's hard to score," he observed. "And harder in the NHL. So Savie's learning to navigate through that his first year here in the National League. And I think he'll be better for it as it goes on."

The condensed NHL schedule has presented additional challenges for rookies like Savoie, making this AHL assignment a strategic opportunity for focused development without the intense pressure of the daily NHL grind.
