Ottawa 67's Face Major Setback in OHL Playoff Opener Against Barrie Colts
The Ottawa 67's experienced their first postseason defeat on Thursday night, falling 4-2 to the Barrie Colts in Game 1 of their Ontario Hockey League second-round series. However, the final score may represent just the beginning of their troubles.
Key Player Suspension Creates Immediate Challenge
Ottawa defenseman David Bedkowski, a crucial acquisition at the trade deadline, received a match penalty for spearing following an incident at the conclusion of the second period. According to OHL regulations, any player assessed a match penalty faces automatic suspension from further competition until the league conducts a formal review of the incident.
The 6-foot-6 Bedkowski's absence creates significant defensive challenges for Ottawa as they attempt to even the best-of-seven series during Saturday night's Game 2 in Barrie.
Controversial Incident Sparks Suspension
The OHL Department of Player Safety will examine an exchange that occurred as both teams left the ice following the second period, with Barrie leading 3-1. Colts captain Kashawn Aitcheson reportedly made comments that provoked Bedkowski, who responded with a spear to Aitcheson's groin area.
Aitcheson remained on the ice in apparent distress while officials assessed Bedkowski a major penalty. Barrie forward Mason Zebeski emphasized the importance of the extended power play opportunity during a second intermission interview, stating, "This is huge. It's one they can't really kill off with a goal. The more we score, the more we kind of shove it down their throats."
Barrie's NHL Prospects Dominate Offensive Play
The Colts' three NHL first-round draft selections demonstrated their elite talent throughout the contest. Kanata native Cole Beaudoin (Utah Mammoth) and Emil Hemming (Dallas Stars) combined on an odd-man rush that Zebeski converted just 33 seconds into the game.
Aitcheson, a New York Islanders first-round selection, extended Barrie's lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal less than five minutes later. Both Aitcheson and Hemming finished the game with one goal and two assists each, while Beaudoin contributed three assists.
"The Colts' offensive firepower proved overwhelming from the opening faceoff," noted hockey analysts reviewing the game footage.
Ottawa's Limited Offensive Response
The 67's managed to capitalize on one of their four power-play opportunities when Nic Whitehead scored his first playoff goal during the second period. Thomas Vandenbeg added another goal with approximately eight minutes remaining in regulation, but Ottawa could not complete the comeback.
Barrie's Ben Wilmott, who scored five goals during the Colts' first-round victory over Niagara, added another crucial goal when left unattended in front of the Ottawa net during the second period.
Regular Season History Provides Little Comfort
Despite splitting their four regular-season meetings with two victories each, Thursday's result marked the first time the home team emerged victorious in the season series between these rivals. The 67's now face the difficult task of rebounding without one of their key defensive contributors as the series continues.
The OHL's disciplinary decision regarding Bedkowski's status will significantly impact Ottawa's strategy and lineup decisions moving forward in this tightly contested playoff matchup.
