Regina Pats Part Ways with Coaches Brad Herauf and Ryan Smith

The Regina Pats are undergoing a significant transformation behind the bench, as the Western Hockey League club has decided not to extend the contracts of head coach Brad Herauf and associate head coach Ryan Smith. This move was officially announced on Tuesday, signaling the end of an era for the team's coaching staff.

A Long-Standing Tenure Comes to an End

Brad Herauf had been an integral part of the Regina Pats organization for 11 seasons, beginning his journey in 2015 as an assistant coach under John Paddock. He was promoted to head coach in 2023 following Paddock's retirement, taking on the challenge of guiding the team through consecutive rebuilding seasons. Under his leadership, the Pats managed to return to the playoffs this year, showcasing resilience and progress.

In a release, Pats general manager Dale Derkatch expressed gratitude for Herauf's contributions, stating, "Brad has been a big part of our organization for a long time. From his work behind the bench to the relationships he built with our players, he's made a lasting impact during his tenure. We thank him for his commitment and wish him all the best moving forward."

Associate Coach Ryan Smith Also Departs

Ryan Smith, who joined the Pats in 2024 after a coaching stint with the Spokane Chiefs, will also be leaving the team. Derkatch acknowledged Smith's role, saying, "Ryan has been an important part of our coaching staff and brought a strong work ethic and professionalism every day. He connected well with our players and played a key role in their development. We thank him for his contributions and wish him the best in his next opportunity."

With the departure of Herauf and Smith, the Pats are now faced with the task of assembling an entirely new coaching staff, as assistant coach Ken Schneider has also elected to retire. This creates a complete overhaul in the team's leadership structure.

Search for New Leadership Underway

The search for a new coaching staff is currently in progress, as the Regina Pats aim to rebuild and refocus for future seasons. This decision comes at a critical juncture, following a playoff return that highlighted both challenges and potential for growth.

As the team navigates this transition, fans and analysts will be closely watching for updates on potential replacements and the direction the Pats will take moving forward. The changes mark a pivotal moment in the club's history, with implications for player development and competitive performance in the WHL.
