Saskatchewan Roughriders Release Receiver Ajou Ajou After CFL Suspension

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have officially released wide receiver Ajou Ajou following his suspension by the Canadian Football League. The CFL imposed a suspension of at least six regular-season games plus two pre-season games for violating the league's gender-based violence and harassment policy.

Details of the Incident and Investigation

On Thursday, the CFL announced the suspension related to an incident that occurred five months ago at a Regina restaurant. The incident took place just two days after the Roughriders' Grey Cup victory. According to league officials, they became aware of multiple allegations in late January and immediately launched a third-party investigation.

The investigation included interviews with Ajou, multiple witnesses, and complainants. The findings revealed that the 24-year-old receiver engaged in aggressive and unwelcome physical contact with multiple women at the Regina establishment on November 18. The CFL has not provided further specific details about the incident.

Team and League Response

Roughriders general manager Jeremy O'Day issued a strong statement regarding the team's decision. "The Saskatchewan Roughriders do not tolerate gender-based violence or harassment and Ajou Ajou's actions go directly against the values we hold as an organization," O'Day declared. "We hold our players to a high standard, one that focuses on integrity and treating people with respect. He failed to meet that standard and is no longer a Roughrider."

CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston emphasized the league's commitment to community safety in his statement. "Protecting the safety and well-being of our communities is non-negotiable," Johnston stated. "Our players are expected to lead with integrity and serve as role models. When improper conduct occurs, our policy is clear, and we will enforce it without exception."

Reinstatement Requirements and Policy Details

Ajou must now complete a comprehensive reinstatement process before he can return to the CFL. This process includes at least fifteen mandatory counseling sessions with a gender-based violence expert. Additionally, he must undergo a psychological assessment with an independent expert before meeting with Commissioner Johnston.

Only upon satisfactory completion of all requirements will Ajou become eligible for reinstatement. The CFL has indicated that if he fails to satisfactorily complete any step of the process, the league reserves the right to modify his discipline.

The CFL's gender-based violence policy covers a broad range of behaviors including intimate partner violence, physical and sexual assault, verbal abuse, coercive control, and attitudes that foster or tolerate violence. All CFL players, coaches, staff, and personnel are required to complete annual gender-based violence and harassment education.

Commissioner Johnston expressed hope that Ajou would learn from this experience and that other players would recognize the seriousness of the league's standards. This case represents a significant enforcement of the CFL's commitment to maintaining safe and respectful environments both on and off the field.
