Windsor Spitfires' Woodall Makes NCAA Commitment to Boston College
Defenceman Carson Woodall has become the first of the Windsor Spitfires' overage players to secure an NCAA commitment this season, announcing his decision to join Boston College next year when his junior eligibility concludes. The Belle River native made his announcement on National Signing Day, marking a significant milestone for both the player and the organization.
Woodall's Journey from Tenth-Round Pick to Top Prospect
Woodall, originally selected by the Spitfires in the tenth round, has developed into one of the Ontario Hockey League's most productive defencemen during his fourth season. With 54 points in 49 games and a team-leading plus-22 rating, the 20-year-old has attracted considerable attention from NCAA programs throughout the campaign.
"I just wanted to find the best spot for me to develop as a person and as a player," Woodall explained. "The hockey culture, the hockey history, the chance to win the championship and an amazing school all made it feel like the right spot."
Woodall expressed particular satisfaction with his progression, noting that "as a tenth-round pick, I never thought I'd be able to go to a school like Boston College." He described the opportunity as "a dream of mine for a while" and expressed gratitude that his performance had garnered such significant interest from prestigious programs.
Spitfires Continue NCAA Pipeline Tradition
The Spitfires have established a strong track record of developing players for NCAA opportunities. Last season, all three of Windsor's overage players secured commitments: Noah Morneau to Bowling Green State University, Ryan Abraham to Michigan Tech University, and Tnias Mathurin to the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Woodall's commitment to Boston College continues this tradition, with the Eagles currently ranked as the No. 11 team in the NCAA. His announcement comes as the Spitfires prepare for their final extended road trip of the regular season.
Costanzo Approaches Prestigious 100-Win Milestone
As the Spitfires embark on their road trip, goaltender Joey Costanzo stands on the brink of joining an exclusive OHL club. The 20-year-old netminder has compiled 99 career victories over parts of five OHL seasons, with 94 of those wins coming since joining the Spitfires from Niagara prior to the 2022-23 season.
Historic Achievement Within Reach
Only six goaltenders in OHL history have reached the 100-win milestone, with J.P. Anderson leading the group at 126 victories. The exclusive club includes Kyle Gajewski (114 wins), Joseph Raaymakers (109), Devin Williams (106), along with Adam Dennis and Jacob Oster (100 each).
Costanzo could potentially join this distinguished group during the Spitfires' upcoming road swing, which would be particularly meaningful as his first OHL victory came in North Bay on December 16, 2021.
Spitfires Embark on Crucial Three-Game Road Trip
The team's final lengthy road trip of the regular season will cover nearly 1,700 kilometres across Northern Ontario. The schedule includes:
- A Thursday matchup against the North Bay Battalion
- A Friday game versus the Sudbury Wolves
- A Super Bowl Sunday matinee against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds
Costanzo emphasized the importance of the trip for team cohesion, stating, "I think it will be good for the guys to get on the road together for some team building. This road trip is always a good test. All three teams have given us good games and I think this could be a measuring stick for us to see what we can accomplish coming down the stretch."
The Spitfires' organization views this period as crucial for both individual development and team performance as they approach the postseason. Woodall's NCAA commitment and Costanzo's approaching milestone represent significant achievements within a program focused on developing talent for higher levels of competition while maintaining competitive success in the OHL.
