From Olympic Heartbreak to Professional Renewal
Ronja Savolainen's journey through the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games proved to be an emotionally draining experience for the talented Finnish defender. After years of intensive training and mental preparation with her national team, Savolainen faced the crushing disappointment of Finland's failure to secure a medal position at the prestigious international competition.
The Weight of Olympic Expectations
The gifted Ottawa Charge defender described how the tournament outcome affected her deeply. "The disappointment took all my emotions," Savolainen explained. "For a week, you were kind of hating hockey. But right now, I'm super proud that I got to represent my country and proud of all my teammates. We put everything we could out there. Obviously it didn't go our way, but it's a great experience. You learn a lot."
Finland's performance at the 2026 Games marked a significant departure from their previous Olympic successes. After claiming bronze medals at both the PyeongChang 2018 and Beijing 2022 Winter Games, the Finnish team experienced a disappointing tournament in Milano Cortina. Their only victory came against Switzerland with a 3-1 score, but they ultimately lost their podium position to that same Swiss team later in the competition.
A Difficult Tournament Performance
The Finnish team faced multiple challenging matches throughout the Olympic tournament. They suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Switzerland that ended their medal dreams, along with decisive defeats against hockey powerhouses Canada (5-0), the United States (5-0), and Czechia (2-0). Savolainen reflected on the emotional toll of the experience, stating, "After four years of extra work, you want to go home with the medal. I had my whole heart in it. And when you don't achieve what you want, you get really disappointed. As a group, you end up very low."
Finding Support in Professional Hockey
Upon returning to Ottawa, Savolainen discovered renewed energy through her teammates on the Professional Women's Hockey League's Ottawa Charge. "When I came back here, the girls on the Charge gave me a lot of energy and now I'm enjoying it like never before," she shared. This professional environment provided the foundation for her emotional recovery from Olympic disappointment.
An Unexpected Connection with Linus Ullmark
A significant turning point in Savolainen's recovery came through her participation in the Ottawa Senators skills competition, where she met Swedish goaltender Linus Ullmark. The two athletes formed an immediate connection when Savolainen revealed she could speak Swedish. "We had a warm up before the Sens skills and he said hi, then we just started to talk about everything," Savolainen recalled. "He was asking a lot of questions about our team and the whole league, how it's working and that kind of stuff, and Olympics."
The conversation quickly developed into a meaningful friendship. "Then he introduced me to his family, and we just became best friends," Savolainen added with a laugh. "It was amazing to see what a big heart he has. He's a great human and a great goalie." Savolainen also connected with fellow Swedish player Fabian Zetterlund during the event, though she noted her relationship with Ullmark developed from scratch. "Ullmark and I never talked before. I knew he was watching our games last year in the last playoffs he said he enjoyed them."
A Gesture of Solidarity
Ullmark demonstrated his support for Savolainen in a particularly meaningful way during a subsequent Senators game. The goaltender arrived at the arena wearing Savolainen's Ottawa Charge jersey, creating a memorable moment for the Finnish defender. Savolainen admitted this gesture gave her "goose bumps" and explained its significance: "I never seen anyone like that wear my jersey. And especially someone like him. He's a big name in the hockey world. So yeah, that was that was so cool. It made me very happy. I got a big smile on my face. It was fun to watch. And it gave me a story, too."
This display of cross-league support between professional athletes highlights the camaraderie that exists within the hockey community, transcending gender divisions and league boundaries. Ullmark's gesture not only provided emotional support to Savolainen but also served as public recognition of women's professional hockey at the highest level.
The experience illustrates how professional athletes navigate the emotional challenges of competitive sports, finding support systems that extend beyond their immediate teams. For Savolainen, the combination of supportive teammates and unexpected friendships with established NHL players like Ullmark helped transform Olympic disappointment into renewed passion for her sport.
