Calgary Flames top prospect Zayne Parekh is poised to make his long-awaited return to game action, embarking on a crucial conditioning assignment with the American Hockey League's Calgary Wranglers. The 19-year-old defenceman, who last played a professional game on November 7, 2025, against the Chicago Blackhawks, has been sidelined with a shoulder injury.
A Golden Opportunity for Game Action
Following a rehab period after his record-setting performance at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, Parekh expressed enthusiasm about the temporary move. "I'm really excited to be here and be able to play games again," Parekh stated. "Just get my timing back and keep improving on things." He confirmed his shoulder is fully healed, noting, "I'm feeling good" after taking time to rest and rehabilitate.
His only light-hearted grievance about the assignment was being issued jersey number 39 with the Wranglers, as his preferred number 19 is worn by team captain Clark Bishop. "I wish they picked a better number, but 39 will work," Parekh said with a smile.
Bridging the Gap from World Juniors to the Pros
Parekh's stint is strategically timed. While he dazzled at the World Juniors, setting a Canadian record for points by a defenceman with 13 in seven games, his transition to the NHL has been a steeper challenge. In 11 games with the Flames earlier this season, he recorded just one assist before the injury halted his progress.
Wranglers head coach Brett Sutter outlined a clear plan to leverage Parekh's offensive talents during the maximum two-week conditioning period. "I watched all his world juniors games... he's going to be a big part of the power-play here and we want him to drive that offence," Sutter explained. The coach emphasized creating an environment where Parekh can succeed with the puck on his stick, while also addressing areas for defensive improvement.
Meaningful Minutes for Development
This AHL assignment is designed to provide Parekh with the significant ice time he needs. With the Flames' NHL defensive pairings currently solidified, the Wranglers can slot Parekh into a top-four role and on the primary power-play unit. This offers a more intensive development opportunity than limited NHL minutes would at this stage.
