Rising Canadian tennis star Victoria Mboko has withdrawn from Wimbledon after suffering an injury to the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in her left knee. The injury occurred during a singles match against Karolina Pliskova at The Queen's Club this week.
Injury Update
Mboko took to Instagram to share the news with her fans. “Hi everyone. I wanted to provide a quick update given everything that has happened in the past 36 hours. Unfortunately, my fall on Wednesday caused an injury to the MCL on my left knee, which sadly means I will miss the remainder of the grass season,” she wrote.
“This unfortunately means Wimbledon too, a tournament I had been so looking forward to playing this year. I am receiving the best medical care and my team and I are focused on a return to court as soon as possible. Thank you to everyone who has reached out and sent messages of support, I am so grateful to you all!”
Match Incident
The injury happened during her round of 16 match at the HSBC WTA tennis Championships. Mboko slipped while attempting to return a shot against Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova and appeared to strain her knee. She was unable to continue the match, resulting in an abrupt end to her run at the tournament.
Doubles Partnership with Serena Williams
The injury also ends Mboko's doubles partnership with tennis legend Serena Williams. The duo had teamed up at The Queen's Club, but Williams will now need to find a new partner if she wishes to continue playing doubles in the coming weeks.
Mboko expressed her gratitude to Williams for the opportunity. “Lastly, thank you @serenawilliams for giving me this incredible opportunity to play alongside you. I learnt so much from you and am so sorry our tournament came to an end prematurely, but I hope we can play together again soon and finish what we started :),” she said.
Mboko is now focused on recovery and aims to return to the court as soon as possible.
