Barrie is putting the focus on children and teenagers during National Youth Week, a city-wide celebration aimed at empowering young people and highlighting their contributions to the community. The event, which runs through early May, features a variety of activities designed to engage youth in sports, arts, and civic participation.
Youth Sports and Recreation
One of the key highlights is a basketball clinic where teenagers can learn skills from local coaches and participate in friendly games. The city has also organized a youth soccer tournament and a skateboarding competition at the downtown park. These events are intended to promote physical activity and teamwork among young residents.
Community Involvement
Beyond sports, National Youth Week includes workshops on leadership, public speaking, and environmental stewardship. Local organizations are hosting sessions on mental health awareness and career planning. A youth job fair will connect teenagers with part-time employment opportunities in Barrie.
Mayor Alex Nuttall emphasized the importance of investing in the next generation. "Our youth are not just the future; they are an integral part of our city today. This week is about celebrating their achievements and giving them the tools to succeed," he said in a statement.
The week will conclude with a youth talent show at the Barrie Community Centre, featuring music, dance, and spoken word performances. All events are free and open to the public. For a full schedule, residents can visit the city's website.
