Air Canada Launches Service Dog Certification with K-9 Country Inn
Air Canada Launches Service Dog Certification Program

Air Canada, in partnership with K-9 Country Inn, has launched Cabin-Ready Canines, a groundbreaking initiative that provides a certification path for customers with owner-trained service dogs. This program, announced on June 2, 2026, aims to enable these travelers to fly with confidence on Air Canada flights.

Addressing a Certification Gap

Currently, many service dogs trained by their owners or outside recognized organizations lack official certification for air travel. Canada lacks a nationwide service dog certification standard, and programs are not available in all provinces. The Cabin-Ready Canines program, initially available in Ontario and Quebec, offers independent assessments by K-9 Country Inn, a respected Canadian non-profit with over 40 years of dog training expertise and dedicated service dog training since 2013.

Industry-Leading Solution

Kerianne Wilson, Director of Customer Accessibility at Air Canada, stated: "Service dogs play a vital role in customer independence. Guided by feedback from the disability community, we have worked closely with K-9 Country Inn to build a practical solution to a complex accessibility challenge. Through Cabin-Ready Canines, we hope to demonstrate that feasible solutions are possible, enabling more customers to travel with dignity and confidence."

Laura MacKenzie, founder and CEO of K-9 Country Inn, added: "Owner-trained service dogs support the independence of countless Canadians, yet a consistent path to demonstrate they meet standards for safe public access has been lacking. We're proud to offer an independent, credible assessment that protects the public and legitimate service dog teams."

Expert Assessment

Brit Williams, a service dog handler for 13 years and Senior Instructor & Trainer at K-9 Country Inn, noted: "As a trainer and a person with a disability, I witness the profound impact a well-trained service dog can have, as well as the stress when no certification options exist. This program fills a real gap by assessing owner-trained dogs to the same standards used across the service dog community."

The program is designed to ensure safety for all passengers while providing a clear path for service dog teams to travel without barriers. Air Canada and K-9 Country Inn emphasize their commitment to accessibility and inclusion in air travel.
