Radio telescope scans of the latest interstellar comet to visit our solar system have found no evidence of alien technology, scientists reported Wednesday.
Interstellar Comet 3I/Atlas
The comet, designated 3I/Atlas, was discovered in 2025 and quickly became the focus of attention for astronomers and SETI researchers. The object, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope on Nov. 30, 2025, is only the third interstellar object detected passing through our solar system.
Search for Artificial Signals
Using the Allen Telescope Array in California, researchers scanned the comet for any artificial radio signals that might indicate the presence of alien technology. The search covered a wide range of frequencies but turned up nothing out of the ordinary.
“We found no evidence of any artificial signals coming from 3I/Atlas,” said Dr. Emily Johnson, lead author of the study published in the Astronomical Journal. “While the search was comprehensive, the lack of signals suggests the comet is a natural object.”
Implications for SETI
The null result is not surprising to many astronomers, who argue that interstellar comets are likely common and mostly natural. However, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence continues, with future interstellar objects expected to be scrutinized.
“Each interstellar object gives us a new opportunity to test the hypothesis that we are not alone,” added Johnson. “Even negative results help refine our search strategies.”
The study underscores the importance of rapid-response observations of interstellar objects, which are often only visible for a short time as they speed through the solar system.
