The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are cautioning drivers about a rise in incidents involving loose and detached wheels as the spring tire change season gets underway. In a recent advisory, the OPP emphasized the importance of proper tire installation to ensure vehicle safety and prevent potentially dangerous situations on the road.
Increase in Wheel Detachment Incidents
According to the OPP, there has been a noticeable increase in reports of wheels coming loose or detaching entirely from vehicles during the spring months. This trend coincides with the period when many drivers switch from winter to summer tires. The police force noted that improper tightening of lug nuts or failure to follow manufacturer specifications are common causes of these incidents.
Safety Recommendations
To reduce the risk of wheel detachment, the OPP recommends that drivers have their tires installed by certified professionals. After installation, vehicle owners should re-torque the lug nuts after driving approximately 100 kilometers, as advised by many tire manufacturers. Additionally, drivers are urged to perform regular visual inspections of their wheels for any signs of looseness or damage.
The OPP also highlighted that loose wheels can lead to serious accidents, including loss of vehicle control, collisions, and injuries to drivers, passengers, and bystanders. In some cases, detached wheels have caused damage to other vehicles and infrastructure.
Public Awareness Campaign
As part of a broader public awareness campaign, the OPP is sharing images and videos of vehicles damaged by loose tires to underscore the dangers. The police force encourages all motorists to prioritize tire safety, especially during the transition between seasons.
Drivers who experience any unusual vibrations or handling issues after a tire change are advised to pull over safely and inspect their wheels immediately. If a wheel is found to be loose, it should be tightened properly before continuing to drive.
The OPP's warning serves as a timely reminder for all vehicle owners to take tire maintenance seriously, not only during spring but year-round, to ensure safe travels for everyone on the road.
