Ottawa police have charged a driver with stunt driving after the individual was caught traveling 55 km/h over the posted speed limit on Highway 174. The incident occurred during a two-day enforcement operation on Tuesday and Wednesday, during which officers also charged another driver with a similar offense.
Enforcement Operation Details
The Ottawa Police Service's Road Safety and District Traffic Units conducted the operation, targeting dangerous driving behaviors. In total, two drivers were charged with stunt driving, which carries serious penalties including immediate license suspension and vehicle impoundment.
Highway 174 Incident
One driver was clocked at 135 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone on Highway 174, a major arterial road in Ottawa. The excessive speed was flagged during routine patrols. Police emphasized that such speeds significantly increase the risk of collisions and endanger all road users.
Legal Consequences
Under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, stunt driving includes traveling 40 km/h or more over the speed limit. Convictions can lead to fines up to $10,000, six demerit points, and a license suspension of up to 30 days. Vehicles used in stunt driving can also be impounded for 14 days.
Police Statement
Ottawa police reiterated their commitment to road safety, stating that enforcement operations are a key tool in reducing serious injuries and fatalities. They urged all drivers to obey speed limits and drive responsibly.
Broader Context
This enforcement comes amid a wider crackdown on dangerous driving in the region. Earlier this year, Ottawa police launched a traffic safety initiative targeting speeding, impaired driving, and other high-risk behaviors. The operation on Highway 174 is part of ongoing efforts to ensure safe roads for all.
