Community Staple Returns to West Edmonton
After a two-year hiatus, Andy's Valleyview IGA is preparing to reopen its doors at the corner of 142 Street and 91 Avenue in Edmonton. The grocery store, which served the community for 60 years under the ownership of Andy Taschuk, shuttered in 2024 when the property was acquired by L'Oca Quality Markets, a premium Alberta grocer.
L'Oca's Closure Paves Way for IGA's Return
L'Oca Quality Markets, which branded itself as a high-end alternative with house-made gelato stations and artisanal butchery, permanently closed its doors after a short tenure. In a statement, the owners cited the difficulty of the business model: "Despite our best efforts, we didn't see a sustainable path forward for the business, so we have made the difficult decision to close." The closure may have also been influenced by competition from nearby Freson Bros, an Alberta family-owned chain.
Renovations Underway for Classic Grocer
Now-hiring signs outside the former L'Oca location advertise the new replacement as Andy's IGA, signaling the return of the classic namesake. Construction efforts are well underway, with renovations visible at the site. The IGA chain is owned by Sobeys, the grocery conglomerate that also operates Safeway and FreshCo. While many IGAs in Alberta have been rebranded into Safeways or FreshCos in recent years, the Valleyview location will retain its historic branding. Sobeys has not yet issued a statement regarding the new IGA.
History and Community Impact
The original Valleyview IGA was a well-known community grocer, particularly recognized for its selection of kosher products. Its return is expected to be welcomed by local residents who valued its neighborhood-focused service. The store's revival underscores the challenges faced by premium grocery concepts in the area and the enduring appeal of established local brands.
