Right-wing podcaster Megyn Kelly unloaded on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s massive wedding celebration at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, calling it “gauche” and attention-seeking. During a Thursday episode of her show, Kelly told guest Maureen Callahan, a Daily Mail columnist, “It’s like, at first I really did not believe that she and he would get married at Madison Square Garden. It’s so on the nose in terms of like, attention getting, and just so gauche.”
Wedding Details and Criticism
The couple’s multi-day festivities, which reportedly cost millions of dollars and closed streets in midtown Manhattan, drew both admiration and criticism. According to a city permit reviewed by the Associated Press, the wedding began Friday and was set to run until 4 a.m. ET on Saturday, Independence Day. Crowds of Swift’s fans, known as “Swifties,” celebrated their idol’s marriage, with some traveling across the country to show support in New York City. However, critics slammed the event as “tacky” or “performative.”
Public and Celebrity Reactions
Abby Stein, a prominent activist, tweeted, “This should never happen for a private event. No one private citizen, no matter how wealthy, famous, and/or popular, should have the power to shut down this much of a city for a private event. Billionaires are a policy failure, tax the rich. All the rich.” Callahan, echoing that sentiment, told Kelly, “this is like a 7-year-old’s idea of what a grand wedding is,” calling it “Taylor’s big fat Disney wedding.”
Kelly’s Comparison to Meghan Markle
Kelly piled on Swift, drawing a comparison to the Duchess of Sussex. “You know, she’s got a little Meghan Markle in her, where, notwithstanding the fact that we all know who she is, she’s got to make sure she’s reminding us all she’s relevant. She’s everywhere. ‘Admire me, look at me,’” Kelly said. “So, yeah, it actually does kind of track.” Callahan quipped that Swift’s wedding will “be a Netflix special.”
