Man wins Grouse Grind challenge with 19 ascents

A North Vancouver man has won the 2026 Grouse Grind challenge by completing 19 ascents of the steep trail in 24 hours, pushing the limits of endurance for a charitable cause.

Record-Breaking Performance

The participant, whose name has not been disclosed, achieved 19 round trips on the Grouse Grind, a grueling 2.9-kilometer trail with an elevation gain of 853 meters. The challenge took place on June 22-23, 2026, and the man completed his final ascent just before the 24-hour deadline.

According to event organizers, the previous record was 18 ascents, set in 2025. The winner’s achievement not only secured the title but also raised funds for local charities supporting mental health and outdoor recreation.

Motivation and Impact

“I wanted to see how far I could push myself while giving back to the community,” the winner said in a statement. “The Grouse Grind is iconic, and this challenge was a way to combine my love for hiking with a meaningful cause.”

The event, organized by the Grouse Mountain Resort, attracted participants from across Canada. The winner’s 19 ascents covered approximately 55 kilometers of vertical climbing, burning an estimated 12,000 calories.

Community Support

Spectators and fellow hikers cheered the winner along the trail, with many donating to the charity fund. The Grouse Grind, known as “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster,” is a popular fitness challenge in North Vancouver, drawing thousands of hikers annually.

Organizers confirmed that the winner will receive a commemorative plaque and a year-long pass to Grouse Mountain. The funds raised will be distributed to local mental health initiatives and trail maintenance programs.
