The search for a missing jet skier on the South Saskatchewan River continues, with Saskatoon officials urging the public to stay off the water due to dangerous conditions.
Search Efforts Underway
Emergency crews have been scouring the river since the jet skier was reported missing on Tuesday evening. The Saskatoon Police Service, along with the fire department and search and rescue teams, are using boats and drones to locate the individual. According to police, the jet skier was last seen near the Circle Drive bridge around 6:30 p.m. local time.
“We are doing everything we can to find this person,” said Saskatoon Police Sergeant Mark Wilson. “The river is extremely dangerous right now, and we urge everyone to avoid it.” The search has been hampered by swift currents and debris in the water.
River Conditions Remain Hazardous
The City of Saskatoon has issued a warning that the South Saskatchewan River is still at elevated levels due to recent heavy rainfall and upstream dam releases. Water levels are above normal, and currents are strong, making any recreational activity risky. “The river is not safe for any type of boating, including jet skis,” said city spokesperson Pamela Goulden. “We are asking people to stay away until conditions improve.”
Environment Canada reported that the region received 50 millimeters of rain over the past week, contributing to the high water levels. The Saskatoon Fire Department has responded to several water rescue calls in recent days.
Community Impact and Safety Reminders
The missing jet skier incident has sparked concern among residents who frequently use the river for recreation. Local authorities are reminding the public to wear life jackets and check water conditions before heading out. “Even experienced boaters can be caught off guard by these conditions,” Wilson added.
The search is expected to continue through the night and into the next day. Anyone with information about the missing jet skier is asked to contact Saskatoon Police.
