A long stretch of hot and humid weather is set to begin this week across the London region, with temperatures climbing into the low 30s Celsius and humidex values making it feel like 40 or higher.
Forecast details
Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for London and surrounding areas, effective Monday through at least Wednesday. Daytime highs are expected to reach 32°C, with overnight lows only dropping to around 20°C, providing little relief.
Humidity levels will be high, pushing the humidex into the low 40s. The combination of heat and humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Health risks and precautions
Health officials are reminding residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, and check on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and those with chronic health conditions.
“We want everyone to enjoy the summer weather safely,” said Dr. Alex Summers, medical officer of health for the Middlesex-London Health Unit. “But when temperatures and humidity are this high, it’s important to take precautions to prevent heat-related illness.”
Cooling centres and tips
The city of London will open cooling centres at various locations, including public libraries and community centres. Residents are encouraged to spend time in air-conditioned spaces and never leave people or pets in parked vehicles.
Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headache. If symptoms progress to heat stroke—characterized by a high body temperature, confusion, and loss of consciousness—seek emergency medical help immediately.
The hot and humid weather is expected to persist through the end of the week, with a possible break by the weekend as a cold front moves through the region.
