Extreme Heat Warning for Ottawa Before Canada Day

Environment Canada issued an extreme heat warning for Ottawa on June 30, 2026, as temperatures are forecast to climb above 35°C, posing health risks ahead of Canada Day festivities. The warning, updated at 4:35 PM EDT, urges residents and visitors to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

Heat Details and Timing

The heatwave is expected to peak on Canada Day, July 1, with humidex values making it feel even hotter. Overnight lows will offer little relief, remaining in the low 20s°C. The warning covers Ottawa and surrounding areas, including Gatineau, Quebec.

According to Environment Canada, the extreme heat is caused by a hot and humid air mass settling over the region. Similar warnings have been issued for other parts of Ontario and Quebec.

Health and Safety Precautions

Officials advise staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat, and checking on vulnerable individuals such as seniors and those with chronic conditions. Cooling centers will be open across the city, including at libraries and community centers. The city of Ottawa has also extended pool and splash pad hours.

"We want everyone to enjoy Canada Day safely, but extreme heat can be dangerous," said Dr. Vera Etches, Ottawa's Medical Officer of Health, in a statement. "Please take breaks in the shade or air conditioning and drink plenty of water."

Impact on Canada Day Events

Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa are expected to proceed as planned, with organizers adding water stations and misting tents. The main events on Parliament Hill and at Major's Hill Park will have increased medical staff on site. Fireworks are scheduled for 10 PM, when temperatures may be slightly cooler.

Residents are encouraged to use public transit to avoid heat buildup in parked cars. The city reminds pet owners not to leave animals in vehicles.
