Alberta RCMP have announced the seizure of approximately 250 litres of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) during a traffic stop east of Calgary. The incident occurred on April 22, 2026, on Highway 1, and authorities believe the drugs are connected to organized crime.
Details of the Traffic Stop
According to RCMP officials, officers conducted a routine traffic stop on a vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 1. During the stop, police discovered a large quantity of liquid suspected to be GHB. Subsequent testing confirmed the substance was GHB, a dangerous central nervous system depressant often used as a date rape drug.
Investigation and Charges
The driver, a 34-year-old man from Calgary, was arrested at the scene. He faces charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime. The investigation is ongoing, and RCMP are working to determine the source of the drugs and any further connections to organized crime networks.
Impact on Community Safety
This seizure represents a significant blow to drug trafficking operations in the region. GHB is known for its high potential for abuse and severe side effects, including respiratory depression and unconsciousness. The removal of such a large quantity from the streets is expected to enhance public safety.
RCMP Superintendent Mark Smith stated, "This seizure demonstrates our commitment to disrupting organized crime and keeping dangerous drugs out of our communities. We will continue to target those who profit from the illegal drug trade."
