Frette, the Italian luxury textile house, opened its first Canadian boutique at 12 Hazelton Ave. in Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood on April 14, marking the North American debut of its residential-inspired retail concept. The store, which is only the second of its kind worldwide after a Shanghai location launched in September 2025, brings the brand's full collection of bedding, loungewear, and home accessories to a Toronto audience.

Store Design and Experience

The boutique occupies a classic red-brick Victorian commercial façade on Hazelton Avenue, blending into the quaint, characterful streetscape. Inside, the space is designed to feel like a well-appointed residence. Open shelving displays neatly folded plush towels and textured throws, while tables of varying heights hold curated details such as embroidered velvet slippers, sculptural ceramics, and design books. At the centre of the room, a bed layered in crisp white linens with subtle detailing, a bold geometric throw in navy and caramel, and a vivid yellow cushion commands attention. Above the headboard, a gallery of framed vintage Frette catalogue covers—colourful and decades old—highlights the brand's heritage of innovation.

Boutique manager Reagan Williams guides clients through what Frette calls the 'Sanctuary Ceremony,' a tactile experience featuring nine finishes, from Percale to Sateen and beyond. Samples are presented both washed and unwashed to show how each fabric evolves over time. "Percale is our most breathable fabric; it's crisp, cool, and matte," says Williams. "It floats above the body, forming a breathable layer with great airflow to keep you fresh through the night. It's ideal for hot sleepers or warmer climates." For those preferring a softer feel, Williams recommends Sateen: "Sateen is buttery soft and gently drapes over the body like your favourite T-shirt. It's great for year-round comfort."

Collections and Customization

British interior designer Tara Bernerd, Frette's creative design partner since 2025, has contributed two collections—"Disrupting Architecture" and "Turning Tables"—featuring throws, cushions, and table linens, both debuting during Milan Design Week. The boutique offers the full Frette collection, including lush loungewear for men and women, leather goods, and sumptuous bedding. A back wall functions as a full-scale visual library of bedding, fabric finishes, colourways, and monogram and pattern options, allowing clients to preview made-to-order customization. Colours, patterns, and monograms can be visualized on screen and crafted to order in Italy, providing a fully personalized experience.

Heritage and Quality

Frette's roots date back to December 1, 1860, when Edmond Frette founded the company in Grenoble, France. Within five years, production moved to Lombardy, near Monza, drawn by the region's artisanal tradition. The brand has dressed the dining cars of the Orient Express and outfitted more than 1,500 luxury hotels worldwide. In 1880, Frette introduced the Vincenzi Loom, enabling richer jacquard patterns and earning the title of Royal Purveyor of Linen to the Italian Crown. Williams emphasizes that quality comes from materials, not thread count: "Frette uses only long and extra-long staple cotton fibres, a category representing less than three per cent of global cotton production, prized for their strength, smoothness and longevity. Some of our fabrics are even designed to grow softer over time."

Community Response

Local clients have been welcoming, with many already familiar with the brand from luxury hotel stays or high-end retailers. Williams notes, "Clients have been extremely welcoming and genuinely delighted to see Frette in their neighbourhood." One client shared that he has owned a set of Frette bedding for almost 30 years, still in use today—a testament to the brand's durability in an era of disposable goods.
