A convicted murderer who escaped from a minimum-security prison on Vancouver Island over the weekend has been found dead off the coast, VancouverNews Service reports.
Details of the escape and discovery
The inmate, whose identity has not been released, was reported missing from the William Head Institution in Metchosin, B.C., on Saturday. Authorities launched a search operation involving multiple agencies, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Coast Guard.
On Tuesday, a body was recovered from the waters off Vancouver Island. The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the remains are those of the escaped inmate. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death, but foul play is not suspected.
Background of the inmate
The man was serving a life sentence for second-degree murder, with no possibility of parole for at least 10 years. He had been transferred to the minimum-security facility in 2024 after demonstrating good behavior at a higher-security institution.
Correctional Service Canada stated that an internal investigation is underway to review the circumstances of the escape. “We are committed to understanding how this occurred and to preventing future incidents,” a spokesperson said.
Impact and response
The escape has raised questions about security protocols at minimum-security prisons. Local residents expressed concern, though officials assured the public that there was no ongoing threat. “The community can rest assured that the situation has been resolved,” said RCMP Cpl. Alex Bérubé.
