Harvey Weinstein suffers heart failure at Rikers Island jail

Disgraced Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein suffered heart failure while incarcerated at Rikers Island jail in New York City approximately two weeks ago, according to TMZ. The 74-year-old was being held at the Queens jail complex as he awaits sentencing for a 2025 sexual assault conviction, with his sentence expected to be handed down in September 2026.

Medical emergency and hospitalization

Weinstein experienced difficulty breathing, prompting his transfer to Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward in Manhattan. He has remained at Bellevue since admission. Doctors placed him on an IV, connected him to a heart monitor, and administered antibiotics to treat pneumonia, which he was already suffering from at the time of the heart failure.

Background of legal and health issues

Weinstein, once a powerful Hollywood producer known for films such as Shakespeare in Love, Pulp Fiction, Gangs of New York, and as an executive producer of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, became the face of the #MeToo movement after a series of sexual assault allegations surfaced in 2017. More than 100 women have accused him of sexual harassment or assault, including actresses Rose McGowan, Ashley Judd, Mira Sorvino, Salma Hayek, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Ongoing legal proceedings

Weinstein's 2025 sexual assault conviction led to his current detention at Rikers Island. His sentencing, originally anticipated in September 2026, remains pending. The heart failure incident adds to his deteriorating health, as he had previously been treated for pneumonia while in custody.
