Man arrested after loaded firearm found during N.B. traffic stop

RCMP in New Brunswick arrested a man after a loaded firearm was found during a traffic stop on July 6, 2026. The incident took place on Route 11 in the community of Pokemouche, about 15 kilometres northwest of Caraquet.

Details of the traffic stop

Police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation at approximately 8:30 p.m. During the stop, officers observed a firearm inside the vehicle. A subsequent search led to the discovery of a loaded handgun.

The driver, a 32-year-old man from Pokemouche, was arrested without incident. He faces charges including possession of a loaded prohibited firearm and careless use of a firearm.

Ongoing investigation

The RCMP said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be laid. The suspect was released and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. Police did not release the man's name to protect the integrity of the investigation.

“Our officers are committed to removing illegal firearms from our communities,” said Cpl. Hans Ouellet of the New Brunswick RCMP in a statement. “We urge anyone with information about illegal firearms to contact police.”
