Laura Loomer Fact-Checked After Baselessly Questioning Mark Kelly Photo
Loomer Fact-Checked Over Baseless Kelly Photo Claim

Laura Loomer, a far-right political activist and ally of President Donald Trump, was swiftly fact-checked on social media after she baselessly insinuated that a photo posted by Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) depicted an extramarital encounter.

On Monday, Loomer shared a screenshot from Kelly’s Instagram account showing the senator alongside a woman and a group of Mexico soccer fans gathered to watch the World Cup match against England. Without providing any evidence, Loomer questioned the woman’s identity, implying that Kelly was publicly flaunting an affair.

“Who is this woman that Arizona Democrat Senator Mark Kelly @SenMarkKelly was getting handsy with yesterday while he was sporting Mexico’s jersey during the World Cup game?” Loomer wrote on X.

Giffords Responds Directly

Former Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), who is married to Kelly, quickly shut down Loomer’s speculation. In a reply on X, Giffords wrote, “Well, she looks pretty great to me @captmarkkelly,” confirming that she was the woman in the photograph.

Giffords’ response garnered widespread support, with many users praising her quick rebuttal. The post also highlighted the couple’s resilience in the face of baseless attacks.

Loomer’s Disparaging Comments

In a subsequent post, Loomer made derogatory remarks about Giffords’ health. Giffords was shot in the head during a 2011 campaign event in Tucson, an attack that left her with a traumatic brain injury and aphasia, a speech disorder that affects communication but does not impair cognitive function.

“A US Senator who represents a BORDER STATE wearing Mexico’s jersey is bad enough, but I thought he was ‘super loyal’ to his medically brain dead wife who was shot in the head?” Loomer wrote. “@GabbyGiffords this doesn’t look like you. Who is the other woman?”

Medical experts and advocates quickly corrected Loomer, noting that Giffords is not “brain dead.” Aphasia, a condition affecting about 2 million Americans, impacts language expression and comprehension but does not equate to brain death. Giffords has been an active advocate for gun control and continues to work with her husband in public service.

Broader Context and Backlash

Loomer’s comments drew widespread condemnation across social media. Critics accused her of spreading misinformation and attacking a survivor of political violence. Kelly, a former NASA astronaut, has represented Arizona in the Senate since 2020 and is known for his bipartisan work on border security and veterans’ issues.

This incident is not the first time Loomer has faced backlash for controversial statements. She has been banned from multiple social media platforms for hate speech and has a history of making unsubstantiated claims about political figures.

As of Tuesday, neither Kelly nor Giffords had issued further statements beyond Giffords’ initial reply. The episode underscores the ongoing challenges of combating misinformation in political discourse, particularly when it targets public figures and their families.
