Canada's ambassador to the United Nations, David Lametti, has accused the United States of deliberately blocking UN initiatives aimed at advancing global equality. In a statement issued on July 4, 2026, Lametti said Washington's actions are undermining multilateral efforts to address systemic inequalities.
Formal Complaint at the UN
Lametti made the remarks during a press conference at UN headquarters in New York, where he outlined Canada's frustration with the U.S. stance on several resolutions. According to Lametti, the United States has used its veto power or procedural tactics to stall or defeat measures related to racial justice, gender equality, and economic equity.
“The United States is obstructing UN efforts at equality,” Lametti said. “We have seen repeated blocking of resolutions that would make meaningful progress on these critical issues.” He did not specify which resolutions were blocked but indicated that Canada would continue to push for reforms.
Diplomatic Tensions Rise
The accusation comes amid growing tensions between the two allies over foreign policy priorities. Canada has been a vocal advocate for stronger UN action on human rights and climate justice, while the U.S. has often taken a more cautious approach. Lametti's comments mark one of the most direct criticisms from a Canadian official toward the U.S. at the UN.
“Canada believes that the UN must be a forum for progress, not obstruction,” Lametti added. “We call on all member states, including the United States, to work collaboratively toward a more equitable world.”
Reaction and Next Steps
The U.S. mission to the UN has not yet responded to the allegations. However, diplomatic sources suggest that Washington views the Canadian criticism as unwarranted, arguing that it has supported many equality initiatives. The incident is expected to be raised in bilateral talks between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Joe Biden.
Canada has also signaled it will seek support from other like-minded nations to advance equality resolutions at the upcoming UN General Assembly session in September.
