Canadian Leaders Back U.S.-Israel Strike on Iran, Hail Khamenei's Death
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre have publicly endorsed the joint military operation conducted by the United States and Israel that resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Both Canadian political figures described the attack as a necessary action against what they termed a barbaric regime responsible for widespread terrorism and human rights violations.
Official Statements from Canadian Leadership
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Prime Minister Carney emphasized Canada's unwavering position regarding Iran. "Canada's position remains clear," Carney declared. "The Islamic Republic of Iran is the principal source of instability and terror throughout the Middle East, has one of the world's worst human rights records, and must never be allowed to obtain or develop nuclear weapons."
Carney further stated, "Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security."
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre echoed these sentiments in his own social media post, asserting that "the death of Ayatollah Khamenei brings justice for the Iranian people after decades of rule under this repressive, theocratic, tyrannical dictatorship."
Poilievre added, "This evil man murdered his own people, denied them their basic freedoms, and fuelled terror and violence around the world. Canada will always stand with the people of Iran as they seek a future defined by democracy, freedom, and peace."
The Case Against the Iranian Regime
The editorial supporting the military action outlined numerous reasons why the Iranian regime's overthrow was justified. Iran has been identified as the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, providing financial and logistical support to multiple organizations classified as terrorist groups by Canada, including Hamas, Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) with its Quds Force.
The regime's domestic record includes the systematic murder, torture, and imprisonment of tens of thousands of Iranian citizens who have protested for basic human rights and improved living conditions. The IRGC was directly responsible for the downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 over Tehran on January 8, 2020, which resulted in the deaths of 55 Canadians, 30 permanent residents, and 138 civilians with ties to Canada.
Additionally, Canada's foreign interference inquiry has identified Iran as a significant security threat. The regime has engaged in transnational repression, threatened Canadian citizens, and attempted to assassinate former Canadian justice minister Irwin Cotler.
International Context and U.S. Involvement
Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced the combat operations against Iran, stating in his address, "To the great proud people of Iran, I say tonight that the hour of your freedom is at hand... When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations."
The editorial concludes that the time had come for Iran's Islamist dictatorship to fall, with Canadian leadership firmly supporting the military action that eliminated the country's supreme leader and potentially opens a new chapter for the Iranian people.
