A former Toronto homicide detective has come forward with explosive allegations of antisemitism and racism within the Toronto Police Service, sparking renewed calls for systemic reform. The officer, who served for over two decades, detailed instances of discriminatory behavior and a toxic culture that he says has been ignored for years.
Allegations of Systemic Bias
In a press conference held on Monday, the former detective described a pattern of antisemitic and racist remarks made by colleagues, as well as unequal treatment of minority officers and community members. He claimed that complaints were often dismissed or met with retaliation, discouraging others from speaking out.
“I’ve seen officers use slurs, mock religious practices, and target minority communities unfairly,” he said. “This is not just a few bad apples—it’s a systemic problem that starts at the top.”
Call for Change
The former officer outlined several key changes he believes are necessary to address the issues, including independent oversight of internal investigations, mandatory diversity training, and a zero-tolerance policy for discriminatory conduct. He also urged the police union to take a stronger stance against racism and antisemitism.
“We need accountability at every level,” he emphasized. “Without real consequences, nothing will change.”
The Toronto Police Service has not yet issued a formal response to the allegations, but a spokesperson said they are reviewing the claims and will cooperate with any investigations.
Community Reaction
The allegations have drawn widespread attention from community leaders and advocacy groups. Jewish and racialized communities have long raised concerns about discrimination within the force, and many see this as a pivotal moment for reform.
“This is a brave step forward,” said a representative from a local anti-racism organization. “We hope this leads to meaningful action and not just empty promises.”
As the story develops, calls for an independent inquiry are growing louder, with some politicians demanding a full review of police practices to root out systemic bias.
