Greene Warns Trump Could Disrupt Midterm Elections

Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, has issued a stark warning that President Donald Trump could potentially attempt to disrupt the upcoming midterm elections. Greene, once a fervent MAGA supporter who has since become a vocal critic of the president, responded to a post on X from conservative podcaster Shannon Joy. Joy speculated that Trump might leverage a "national emergency" related to Iran or another manufactured crisis to cancel the elections scheduled for November 2026.

Growing Concerns Over Election Integrity

Greene shared Joy's apprehension, writing, "Yeah I could see it," and adding the word "INSANE" to emphasize her alarm. This sentiment echoes earlier fears expressed by former Rep. Joe Walsh, a Republican from Illinois, who stated on MSNBC that he has no doubt Trump could try to halt the midterm elections, citing the president's past efforts to overturn an American election four years ago.

Reports of Executive Order Drafting

Adding to the controversy, The Washington Post recently reported that a core group of MAGA allies is drafting an executive order aimed at nationalizing elections. Critics have denounced this move as blatantly illegal. Earlier this year, Trump himself told Reuters, "we shouldn't even have an election," further fueling suspicions about his intentions.

Political Stakes and GOP Vulnerabilities

The midterm elections carry significant political weight, as the party in power typically loses seats. Current polls suggest this trend will hold true in 2026, with the Republican Party guarding a slim majority in the House of Representatives. Flipping even a handful of seats could shift control to the Democrats, potentially derailing Trump's agenda. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, underscored this risk last week, stating, "If we lost the midterms — heaven forbid — if we lost the majority in the House, it would be the end of the Trump presidency in real effect."

Trump's Actions and Base Fractures

Trump's recent decision to attack Iran has complicated the political landscape, with early polls indicating the move is widely unpopular. This incursion has caused further divisions within the MAGA base, given Trump's campaign promises to end U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts. Greene, who was once a strong ally of the president and frequently appeared with him at events, has publicly broken with Trump over this issue.

Greene's Break from Trump and Apology

The rift between Greene and Trump began last year when she joined a congressional effort to release files related to Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender who was once close friends with Trump. In response, Trump attacked Greene, labeling her a "traitor." Greene ultimately resigned from Congress and apologized for her role in what she termed "toxic politics." She also declared that MAGA "was all a lie," a position reinforced by Trump's military action in Iran.

In a tweet on Saturday, Greene described the U.S. military action as "an utter betrayal of his base" and expressed her disillusionment, writing, "I did not campaign for this. I did not donate money for this. I did not vote for this, in elections or Congress. This is heartbreaking and tragic. And how many more innocent will die? What about our own military? This is not what we thought MAGA was supposed to be. Shame!"
