A letter writer criticizes Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow for cheering 'free Palestine' during a Pride parade, calling it a political move to court Muslim voters ahead of the municipal election. Jeffrey Manly of Toronto writes that Chow's comment shows 'disdain for the Jewish community' and is a cynical vote-seeking tactic.
Chow's Pride comment draws fire
In a letter responding to Gordon Anderson's June 30 column, Manly says Chow's reply to a supporter—'Yes, free Palestine'—reveals her priorities. 'Since there are more Muslim voters than Jewish voters, it makes sense for her to basically ignore the Jewish community,' Manly writes. He concludes: 'Shame on Olivia Chow!'
Carney's contradictions criticized
Another letter takes aim at Prime Minister Mark Carney's shifting positions on CUSMA negotiations. Bob Atkinson of Mississauga quotes Stephen Leacock: 'He flung himself from the room, flung himself upon his horse and rode madly off in all directions.' Atkinson says Carney's 'constantly changing narratives' make him difficult to pin down.
Toronto's endless construction
Allan Leggate of Toronto offers a satirical welcome to visitors: 'The city is under construction and in many areas the wearing of PPE, such as hard hats, safety goggles and respirators, is advised.' He warns of delays and advises those with stress or heart issues not to drive. 'Construction is expected to continue for several years but could last longer. Enjoy your stay.'
