Police on Vancouver Island have announced a major arrest following a violent home invasion and alleged sexual assault of an elderly woman in Courtenay shortly after Christmas. A 25-year-old man is now facing a total of nine criminal charges in connection with the incident, which has shaken the Comox Valley community.
Details of the Alleged Attack
The Comox Valley Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were called to a residence in Courtenay at approximately 7:30 a.m. on December 28. The call was in response to a reported break-and-enter, where an 83-year-old woman was home at the time.
According to police, the victim described the suspect as a masked man wearing dark clothing and sunglasses. The incident involved an attack, unlawful confinement, and theft. The suspect allegedly confined the senior in her own home, assaulted her, and stole property valued at over $5,000.
Arrest and Charges Laid
Following an intensive investigation, the Comox Valley RCMP Major Crime Unit, with support from patrol officers and forensic specialists, identified and arrested a suspect. Matthew Russell McCharles-Carter, 25, has been taken into custody and is being held pending court proceedings.
