Police in Barrie, Ontario, have launched a criminal investigation following the tragic discovery of a deceased 10-year-old boy during a New Year's Eve wellness check.
Wellness Check Leads to Tragic Discovery
According to authorities, officers were called to a residence on Bayview Drive near Little Avenue around 3 p.m. on December 31. The call was initiated for a well-being check on the occupants of the home.
Upon entering the unit, police made a heartbreaking discovery. A 10-year-old boy was found deceased inside the residence. A 47-year-old woman, identified as the child's mother, was also located at the scene.
Mother Hospitalized as Major Crime Unit Takes Over
The woman was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention, where she remains. Police have not disclosed the nature of her condition or the circumstances that led to the wellness check.
In a statement released on New Year's Day, the Barrie Police Service confirmed that its Major Crime Unit has assumed control of the investigation, classifying it as a criminal matter. Officials were quick to assure the public that there is no perceived risk to public safety related to this incident.
Police Withhold Details, Cite Privacy for Family
Out of respect for the grieving family and the sensitive nature of the investigation, police have stated they will be limiting the information released to the public. "Due to the nature of the incident and to respect the privacy of the family involved, updates will only be provided as the investigation permits," the police statement read.
