Edmonton Prowler Gets 6.5 Years for Assaults, Thefts

An Edmonton man who stalked and sexually assaulted multiple women in a residential neighborhood has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison. Austin Dean St. Germain, 29, received his sentence from Court of King’s Bench Justice Susan Richardson on March 2, 2024, following a series of disturbing crimes that terrorized the Cumberland area in north Edmonton throughout 2023.

Pattern of Predatory Behavior

St. Germain’s criminal activities began in the spring of 2023, when police received seven separate reports from women describing attacks by a man in his late twenties. The Edmonton Police Service eventually identified St. Germain as the suspect and charged him in May 2023 with a dozen crimes involving four victims. These charges included sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, choking to overcome resistance, break and enter, robbery, possession of stolen property, and fraud under $5,000.

Specific Crimes and Modus Operandi

According to court documents and an agreed statement of facts, St. Germain victimized four women between March and May 2023. At the time, he was described as a heavy drinker and drug user living in the basement of a townhome in the Cumberland neighborhood. His crimes followed a disturbing pattern:

  • He initially targeted a woman living next door, breaking into her home on at least four occasions during nighttime hours
  • The break-ins escalated to the point where St. Germain kicked down her front door while the terrified victim barricaded herself in her bedroom
  • He later returned to the same home while the victim was away to steal televisions, jewelry, and alcohol
  • St. Germain exhibited bizarre behavior including microwaving a security camera and laying out a black lacy dress on the victim’s bed

Violent Street Attacks

Beyond the home invasions, St. Germain also attacked women on public streets. His victims included a mother walking her daughter to preschool and another woman he sexually assaulted while holding a butcher’s knife. Forensic evidence confirmed St. Germain’s DNA was found on the body of the knife-point assault victim.

Discovery of Stolen Property

When police searched St. Germain’s basement residence, they discovered a collection of dozens of pairs of stolen women’s underwear. Investigators also found stolen checkbooks, banking documents, and jewelry that St. Germain had sold at a nearby pawnshop. The accused had listed some stolen items, including a television, on Facebook Marketplace. During police interviews, St. Germain admitted he committed the thefts to fund his drug and alcohol habits.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

St. Germain was denied bail following his arrest and eventually pleaded guilty last year to four counts: break and enter, sexual assault, and robbery. During a sentencing hearing in January 2024, the Crown prosecutor sought a nine-year prison term, while defense counsel presented arguments for a lesser sentence. Justice Richardson ultimately settled on a sentence of six and a half years, which included three and a half years specifically for the knifepoint sexual assault of a stranger.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about public safety in residential neighborhoods and the serious consequences of predatory behavior targeting vulnerable individuals. The Edmonton Police Service had issued public warnings during the investigation, urging community members to come forward with information about the attacks.
