York Regional Police have formally charged a 29-year-old Oshawa resident with six criminal offences following a severe hit-and-run incident in Markham. The collision, which occurred on February 19, resulted in a 19-year-old female victim being carried approximately 50 metres on the hood of the vehicle after she was struck.
Details of the Incident
The incident took place at approximately 3:41 p.m. at the intersection of Denison Street and Featherstone Avenue. Police responded to reports of a pedestrian being struck and discovered the victim, who had just exited a bus and was crossing the intersection northbound towards Denison Street.
The victim was immediately transported to a trauma centre, where she remains in serious condition with injuries described as life-altering. Authorities emphasize that the driver would have been aware of striking someone, given the distance the victim was carried on the vehicle.
Arrest and Charges
On Friday, March 25, 2026, officers executed search warrants at residences in Richmond Hill, Oshawa, and Toronto, leading to the arrest of the suspect. During the operation, the suspect's vehicle and a quantity of controlled substances were seized.
The suspect, identified as Nathan Kumar Persaud, faces multiple charges, including dangerous operation causing bodily harm, dangerous operation, failure to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm, trafficking opioids, and two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Investigation and Public Appeal
Investigators believe the suspect took deliberate steps to conceal his identity and repair damage to the vehicle to avoid detection. Police have released his photo and are appealing to the public for assistance.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have sold parts to the suspect or performed repairs on the vehicle inadvertently to come forward. They warn that individuals assisting in concealing, repairing, or altering the vehicle could face charges as accessories after the fact.
