Family Reveals Windsor Homicide Victim Concealed Full Extent of Threats She Faced

The family of Nancy Grewal, a Windsor resident who was tragically murdered in early March, now fears that she kept significant secrets about the scope and seriousness of threats directed against her. This revelation comes as investigators continue to explore all possible motives behind her violent death.

Hidden Dangers and Family Concerns

Alishaa Grewal, the younger sister of the victim, expressed deep concern in a recent phone interview from her home in Mumbai, India. She revealed that while the family was aware of an arson attempt on Nancy's Windsor home in November, they have since learned there was much more occurring behind the scenes.

"When the arson incident happened in November, she then spoke about the threats going on, but she never told us that it was that serious, maybe because she was scared," said Alishaa Grewal. "She was hiding so many things from us. Now we're assuming she was receiving threats we don't know about."

Nancy Grewal, a 45-year-old personal support worker, was stabbed multiple times around 9:30 p.m. on March 3 as she left a client's home in the 2400 block of Todd Lane in LaSalle. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital, leaving her family and community in shock.

Online Activism and Potential Motives

Grewal had moved from India to Canada in 2018, joining what is recognized as the world's largest Sikh population outside of her native country. She became known as an outspoken online critic of Khalistan, a separatist movement advocating for a Sikh state in the Punjab region of northern India.

Her death quickly attracted international attention, particularly in India, with widespread speculation focusing on potential connections to Khalistan extremists. The case has drawn significant media coverage across continents as authorities work to determine the precise circumstances surrounding her murder.

"There is a 50 per cent chance it is linked to the separatist movement but there is also a 50 per cent chance it is something else," Alishaa Grewal cautiously noted, reflecting the uncertainty that continues to surround the investigation.

Police Investigation and Ongoing Questions

Local police have confirmed they are "exploring all investigative avenues" including the potential link to Grewal's criticisms of Khalistan. However, authorities have not publicly confirmed any specific connection at this stage of the investigation.

Alishaa Grewal, 36, explained that her sister had received threats for her online activities, which included discussions about Khalistan and other contentious issues. "For the past few years, she was making those videos on social media," she said. "The threats had only been made on social media, which we took lightly, but after the arson attack on her house, maybe those threats were much more serious."

The Ontario Provincial Police, now leading the homicide investigation, declined to comment on the Grewal family's specific concerns. Sergeant Ed Sanchuk stated on Thursday: "As the investigation remains active and ongoing, we cannot disclose additional details of the case."

A Warning Ignored

In a rare English-language video posted on November 11, Nancy Grewal herself expressed fear for her safety following the arson attempt on her residence. "I believe God saved me," Grewal said in the video. "God saved my life. Nothing happened to me. Nothing happened to my house. Everything is going good. I just called the cops. I know who this person is. This person belongs to Khalistan."

This statement, combined with her home surveillance system that verbally warned people to stay away, suggests Grewal was acutely aware of potential dangers but may have minimized these concerns when speaking with family members. The discrepancy between what she shared publicly and what she revealed to loved ones has left her family grappling with unanswered questions about the true nature of the threats she faced.

As the investigation continues, the Grewal family mourns their loss while seeking answers about what precisely led to Nancy's violent death and why she may have chosen to conceal the full extent of the dangers she perceived.
