Windsor residents planning to light fireworks this Canada Day must adhere to specific municipal regulations to ensure safety and avoid fines. According to the City of Windsor's bylaws, consumer fireworks are only permitted on July 1 between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. No public displays are allowed without a special permit, and users must maintain a minimum distance of 15 metres from buildings, vehicles, and spectators.
Permitted Times and Locations
The city strictly limits fireworks use to Canada Day only. Any other day requires a permit from the Windsor Fire Department. Fireworks cannot be set off on streets, sidewalks, or parks without prior authorization. Private property owners must ensure they have enough space and that weather conditions are safe.
Safety Requirements
Users must be at least 18 years old to purchase or discharge fireworks. They should have a bucket of water or hose nearby and never relight malfunctioning fireworks. Sparklers, while popular, burn at over 1,000°C and should be handled with care, especially around children.
"We want everyone to enjoy Canada Day, but safety comes first," said a Windsor Fire Department spokesperson. "Follow the rules and keep a safe distance."
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Violating the fireworks bylaw can result in fines up to $5,000. In 2025, the city received 15 complaints and issued three tickets. Residents are encouraged to attend professional displays instead, such as the one at Riverfront Festival Plaza starting at 10 p.m.
