Two suspects were captured on surveillance video breaking into a business in Elora, Ont., and setting a fire that caused approximately $50,000 in damages, according to police.
Break-in and fire caught on camera
Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police said the incident occurred on June 27, 2026, at a commercial property in the village of Elora, about 20 kilometres northwest of Guelph. The suspects forced entry into the business and then started a fire inside the premises.
Surveillance footage shows two individuals entering the building and later leaving as flames become visible. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the building sustained significant structural and content damage.
Police investigation and appeal for tips
Police are investigating the incident as both a break-and-enter and arson. They have released images of the suspects from the video and are asking anyone with information to come forward. The suspects are described as wearing dark clothing and hooded sweatshirts.
“We are urging anyone who recognizes these individuals or has information about this incident to contact police,” said Constable Mark Taylor of the Wellington County OPP. “This was a dangerous act that could have spread to neighbouring properties.”
Business owner speaks out
The business owner, who spoke with CTV News, expressed frustration over the damage. “It’s devastating to see your hard work go up in smoke,” said the owner, who did not want to be named. “We’re looking at thousands of dollars in repairs and lost inventory.”
The incident has shaken the local community, with residents expressing concern about safety in the usually quiet tourist town known for its historic limestone buildings and the Elora Gorge.
