Senior arrested after fleeing bank robbery in taxi: Winnipeg police

A 68-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly robbing a bank in Winnipeg and fleeing the scene in a taxi, police said.

Robbery and arrest details

Winnipeg police responded to a bank robbery at a financial institution in the 300 block of Portage Avenue around 10:30 a.m. on July 2, 2026. According to police, the suspect entered the bank, demanded cash, and fled with an undisclosed amount of money. He then entered a taxi and directed the driver to leave the area.

Police located the taxi a short time later and arrested the suspect without incident. The driver was not harmed and is cooperating with investigators. Police recovered the stolen money at the scene.

Charges and court appearance

The suspect, a 68-year-old Winnipeg man, faces charges of robbery and possession of property obtained by crime. He was detained in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on July 3, 2026.

“We’re thankful that no one was injured and that the suspect was taken into custody quickly,” said Constable Jason Michalyshen, a Winnipeg police spokesperson, according to a news release.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are not releasing the name of the bank or the exact amount stolen.
