Letters to the Editor: July 4, 2026

In a series of letters published July 4, 2026, readers express strong opinions on current political and social issues, from the state of 24 Sussex Drive to healthcare worker appreciation.

Give Trudeau Some Work

Terry Toll from Campbell's Bay, Quebec, suggests that those responsible for ruining Canada should be tasked with rebuilding 24 Sussex Drive. He writes, "Every Liberal who has ruined Canada, that's who. Imagine silver-spooned Justin Trudeau and Mark Carney with hammers. Sure, it would fall apart, but it would be worth it to see them do hard labour for their past deeds." The letter implies that such a scenario is unlikely, as noted by the editor.

Cancel the Bailout

Vivienne H. Edwards from Peterborough criticizes Mark Carney's plan for a government-funded renovation of the prime minister's official residence, comparing it to a GoFundMe deal. She argues that Carney should instead cancel the "outrageous bailout for the B.C. condo developers, who know the market risks and should be responsible for off-loading their surplus inventory." Edwards adds that Carney should not ask more from Canadian taxpayers when most are already financially strained. The editor comments that this is "the Liberal way."

Good Medicine

Tim Flynn from Stouffville shares a personal experience after spending ten weeks in Oshawa and Whitby hospitals and then with Bayshore rehab following a dislocated foot and fractured ankle. He expresses strong respect for nurses, personal support workers, kitchen and cleaning staff who cared for him. Flynn writes, "Theirs is a very stressful occupation with so many variables including feeding, bathing, tending to bodily functions, dealing with grumpy patients, foul language, mental issues, etc, all the while remaining supportive. Thank you for all you do and thank you for your service." The editor acknowledges that medical professionals go above and beyond given the daily strain in the failing healthcare system.
